Solsustech is the first in the industry to offer complete support for training, growing and superb marketing channels.
It is a complete hydroponic design and servicing company specializing in floating lettuce production. The name Solsustech is derived from the three words solutions, sustainability, and technology. More than just a name it is was designed to provide immediate and lasting solutions to the agriculture industry utilizing sustainable technology.
This concept began in 2001 with the start of the first small ebb and flow projects to the floating lettuce facility in 2005. Both were located in the extreme heat of Arizona and many participants and University personnel were watching the vegetable production facility to see results. In 2007 results were public and the successful completion of the facility generated approximately 50 heads of lettuce per square foot of pond area per year. Varieties included butter, Bibb, leaf and romaine lettuce as well as organic and heirloom varieties of lettuce, tomatoes cucumbers and chilies. Both the extremely high water temps and high salt content were original causes for alarm, but with the right combination of ingenuity and technology were overcome.
From concept and idea to completion, the business required broad knowledge of the vegetable industry as well as greenhouse technology and other field production methods. We utilize natural thermal properties of water to reduce heating and cooling costs and at the same time produce a variety of crops.
The biggest benefit this offered for both the existing businesses and new growers is the ability to help with marketing, find outlets and grow custom varieties and tastes for specialty and niche markets. On these smaller scale projects- half acre- many sell directly to local markets or retail niche markets to obtain the retail revenues. Education for new and experienced growers is important and with an emphasis on education and agriculture, Solsustech promotes on line educational opportunities, staff training manuals and grower forums to discuss news, trends and potential industry problems.

In November 2007 the New Oxford American Dictionary announced locavore as the word of the year. Since the word’s creation by local food activist and chef, Jessica Prentice of San Francisco, many people have accepted the challenge to eat only locally grown food whenever possible.
